Layers of Meaning: My Favourite Mixed Media Creations
Guardian and Friend The protective presence of a loyal dog alongside a child highlights trust and companionship, brought to life through warm, earthy pigments.
Art has always been a journey into presence for me—an immersive experience where time seems to stand still. Beyond photography, I am deeply passionate about Mixed Media Artwork, a process that is both tactile and transformative. These creations are masterpieces of hands-on craftsmanship, where every stroke, every texture, carries intention and authenticity.
The Embrace A tender moment shared between future mother & father, their closeness framed by layers of texture and subtle blue hues.
The Sisters’ bond Earthy tones and delicate lighting capture the strength and serenity of this bond, emphasizing the depth of their connection.
Unlike digital filters or paint-by-number techniques, mixed media art honors timeless materials and traditions. In our work, we integrate oil paints, earth pigments, gold and silver foils, wax, and black-and-white photography to create pieces that are textured and deeply alive. These materials have histories of their own, each adding layers of meaning to the final work. The result is original art that speaks to both the timeless beauty of its creation and the human stories it seeks to tell.
Over the years, we have created many pieces, some of which are now over a decade old. These works continue to captivate me, each one a powerful statement on the timelessness of art and the profound beauty of its subject matter: human beings.
Creating a Mixed Media Artwork is a meticulous process. It begins with an image—often a black-and-white photograph—which serves as the foundation. From there, we build layers with pigments and paint, blending in natural elements like wax, gold and silver leaf to evoke depth and emotion. Wax, with its ability to preserve and enhance texture, seals the work in a dreamlike finish, making the artwork feel both ancient and immediate.
Contemplative Grace A serene portrait bathed in soft, ethereal light, conveying introspection and quiet elegance.
Every material has a purpose. Earth pigments ground the piece in natural tones, connecting it to the elements. Gold and silver foils when used add a sense of ethereal beauty, catching light in ever-changing ways. These materials allow each piece to tell its own story with presence and subtle dynamism.
One of the greatest joys of this medium is how the art matures over time. The materials age gracefully, deepening the textures and patinas. I love revisiting older works and seeing how they continue to evolve, almost as if they are living entities. Some pieces that we created ten years ago feel more relevant today than ever—a testament to both the timeless craftsmanship and the enduring human stories captured within them.
Each piece is a reflection of presence and humanity. It celebrates the beauty of being, the richness of identity, and the silent power of emotion. The subjects I portray—whether individuals, families, or abstract expressions of the human experience—are elevated through this process, transformed into heirlooms that speak to future generations.
